Founded by the Romans as Asturica Augusta (after the local Celtic people, the Astures). Its Roman walls, from the turn of the 3rd and 4th centuries, still encircle parts of the old town.
Astorga is about 3 hours away from Madrid by bus, but it also has good connections to Oviedo and Valladolid.
It is at the junction of the Camino Francés and the Vía de la Plata.

Palacio Episcopal de Astorga
The Episcopal Palace was designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. It is one of only three buildings by Gaudí outside of Catalonia (see also the Casa Botines in León). These days it hosts the Museo de los Caminos.
