Estella-Lizarra was founded in 1090 by King Sancho Ramírez, who granted it a fuero (town charter) to attract settlers and redirected the Camino Francés through the new town. It developed rapidly into an important pilgrimage and commercial centre, with numerous churches, monasteries and hospitals serving pilgrims.
