Puente La Reina - Gares

The bridge over the Río Arga was built in the 11th century, traditionally attributed to Queen Muniadona, wife of Sancho III, to facilitate pilgrims' journey to Santiago de Compostela. The town of Puente la Reina was founded in 1122 by King Alfonso I, taking its name from the bridge.

Puente románico

The Romanesque bridge spanning the Río Arga and giving the town its name was constructed in the 11th century. According to the legend of the txori (bird in Basque), a small bird would fly down to the Río Arga, wet its wings in the river, and then fly to the statue of the Virgen del Puy in a chapel inside the central tower of the bridge, where it would clean the Virgin's face.
