What to see in A Ponte Maceira

Ponte Vella

The medieval Ponte Vella crosses the Río Tambre at A Ponte Maceira, a village of stone houses and old watermills. Probably built in the 13th or 14th century, the bridge has five main arches and two smaller openings for floodwaters. It partly collapsed in 1792 and was rebuilt during the 19th century.

A local legend associates the crossing with St James's disciples, who escaped Roman pursuers when a bridge collapsed behind them. The Codex Calixtinus calls the legendary bridge As Pías, but the crossing at Ons, also over the Tambre, is considered a more likely location. The broken bridge appears on Negreira's municipal coat of arms.
