Hospital takes its name from a former pilgrim hospital, reportedly destroyed by French troops during the Napoleonic invasion.

The surrounding area is associated with the mysterious Vákner, a creature described by the Armenian bishop Martiros Erznkatsi during his pilgrimage to Fisterra in the late 15th century. He described encountering a large, dangerous animal that even groups of twenty travellers feared.

Shortly after Hospital, the Camino divides into two routes: left towards Fisterra via Cee, or right towards Muxía via Dumbría.
