Hospital de Órbigo developed around a pilgrim hospital founded by the Knights of St John of Jerusalem on the opposite bank from the older settlement of Puente de Órbigo. The hospital gave the town its name, while the order's legacy also survives in the dedication of the parish church to San Juan Bautista.

Puente del Paso Honroso
The medieval Puente del Paso Honroso crosses the Río Órbigo and dates principally from the 13th century, although it has been rebuilt several times. In 1434, the Leonese knight Suero de Quiñones and nine companions staged the Passo Honroso beside the bridge, challenging other knights to jousts over 30 days. Suero presented himself as a "prisoner of love", wearing an iron collar until he had fulfilled the challenge. Afterwards, the ten knights continued on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Two stone monuments on the bridge commemorate the event, one of them listing the ten participating knights.
