Portomarín used to be closer to the Miño river originally than it is today. The most important buildings were moved, stone by stone, to a higher location between 1956 and 1962, in order to save them from getting flooded after a hydroelectric dam upstream was finished, creating the Belesar reservoir. In drier times, when the water retreats, remains of old stone houses and the Roman bridge can still be seen.

Igrexa de San Nicolao

Igrexa de San Nicolao

The 13th century church, which also doubles as a fortress, was rebuilt stone by stone on its current location. So much so, you can still see the numbering on the stones.
