Póvoa de Varzim has always been one of the most important fishing ports in Portugal, and, more recently, a popular beach seaside resort. It retains a strong identity based on fishing and its supposedly Norse connections, which is prominently on display on street signs and on the large azulejo panels opposite the casino in the form of siglas poveiras or marcas poveiras.
