O Porriño is an industrial town closely associated with granite quarrying, including the distinctive pink stone known as Rosa Porriño. The quarries can be seen in the distance around Orbenlle on the Camino approach from Tui, and granite remains an important local industry.
The town was also the birthplace of architect Antonio Palacios, whose work transformed parts of central Madrid and left several distinctive buildings in his home town.
What to see in O Porriño
Casa Consistorial
The Casa do Concello was designed in 1919 by Antonio Palacios Ramilo, who was born in O Porriño in 1874, and inaugurated in 1924. Palacios also designed many buildings in Madrid, including the Círculo de Bellas Artes, and co-designed the Palacio de Cibeles. In front of the town hall, a bronze statue depicts Palacios seated in a chair.
