Ponte Sampaio developed around the historic crossing of the Rio Verdugo on the road towards Pontevedra. In June 1809, Spanish troops and local volunteers defeated Marshal Ney's French forces here during the Peninsular War, after partially demolishing the bridge to block their advance.
