Atapuerca is best known for the archaeological sites in the nearby Sierra de Atapuerca, which preserve evidence of human occupation stretching back more than one million years. The sites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, and many of the human fossils discovered there are now displayed at the Museo de la Evolución Humana in Burgos.
Atapuerca also gave its name to a battle fought here in 1054 between the brothers García III of Pamplona and Fernando I of León and Castile. García was killed in the battle, which is re-enacted near the village each August.
The archaeological sites in the Sierra de Atapuerca can only be visited on a guided tour and must be booked in advance. Tours can depart by shuttle bus from CAREX, on the eastern edge of Atapuerca. Schedules vary during the year.
