Castromaior takes its name from the large Iron Age fortified settlement beside the village, one of the most substantial archaeological sites directly beside the Camino Francés in Galicia.

Castro de Castromaior
The Castro de Castromaior was occupied from around the 5th century BC until the 1st century AD and covers more than five hectares. Its unusually complex defences consist of six enclosures protected by stone walls and ditches. Excavations have uncovered houses, streets, hearths and sections of the main entrance, giving a good impression of how an Iron Age castro settlement was organised.
