Samos developed around the monastery of San Xulián, founded in the 6th century and still inhabited by Benedictine monks. Alfonso II of Asturias spent part of his youth here before becoming king; after the discovery of the tomb attributed to St James during his reign, he travelled to Santiago de Compostela and is traditionally regarded as the first pilgrim.

Mosteiro de San Xulián

Founded in the 6th century, the Mosteiro de San Xulián de Samos is one of Spain's oldest inhabited monasteries, although most of the vast present complex dates from rebuilding after a fire in 1558. In the 16th-century Claustro das Nereidas, look for a vault boss bearing the playful inscription Que miras, bobo ("What are you looking at, fool?"). A Benedictine community still lives in the monastery.
