Fene's modern identity is closely tied to ASTANO, the shipyard established at nearby Perlío in 1941. It grew from building small wooden fishing vessels into a major producer of large oil tankers during the 1960s and 1970s, transforming the local economy and population. The yard is now Navantia Fene, and its enormous gantry crane remains a landmark on the Ría de Ferrol.
