Redondela's medieval centre was enclosed by walls, with the fishing quarter of A Esfarrapada developing outside them around a small tidal port and the Jacobean route. In the 19th century, two enormous iron railway viaducts were built across the town; one still carries trains today and together they gave Redondela the nickname vila dos viadutos (town of viaducts).

Igrexa de Santiago

Igrexa de Santiago

The present church dates mainly from the 15th century, replacing an earlier church consecrated by Archbishop Diego Xelmírez of Santiago in 1114. Above the large rose window is a figure of Santiago Matamoros, the mounted warrior representation of the apostle.
