Los Arcos grew at a crossroads between Navarre and Castile and had three pilgrim hospitals during the Middle Ages. Together with Sansol and Torres del Río, Los Arcos was incorporated into Castile in 1463 and remained under Castilian rule until 1753, when the three towns were reincorporated into Navarre.

Iglesia de Santa María
Construction of the Iglesia de Santa María began in the late 12th century, around the time King Sancho VI of Navarre granted the town its charter in 1175. The church was subsequently rebuilt and enlarged over the following centuries, in part because of the large numbers of pilgrims passing through Los Arcos.
