Real Mosteiro de Santa María de Oia
Founded in the 12th century and later incorporated into the Cistercian Order, the monastery also formed part of the defence of this exposed coast. Its monks were already known as monxes artilleiros ("artillery monks") by 1580, when a royal provision documented a military company at Oia. In 1624, the monastery's artillery sank two Turkish corsair vessels and drove off three others. King Felipe IV subsequently granted the church the title Santa María la Real de Oia and confirmed the monastery's existing Imperial and Royal title.
