Real Mosteiro de Santa María de Oia
Founded in the 12th century and later incorporated into the Cistercian Order, the monastery also formed part of the defence of this exposed coast. In 1624, its armed monks used cannon against corsair vessels offshore, an episode that helped earn them the nickname "monxes artilleiros" (artillery monks) and royal recognition from Felipe IV.
