Pedra Furada is named in local tradition for the pierced stone beside the parish church. Legend says Santa Leocádia, the village's patron saint, was buried alive and forced her head through the stone covering her grave.

Until around the 1960s, unmarried women also passed through the opening in the belief that doing so would help them find a husband.
