El Acebo marks the descent into El Bierzo, a mountainous region with a milder, wetter climate, vineyards and widespread use of slate in traditional buildings. The village received royal privileges in return for placing wooden stakes along the route towards Foncebadón, helping pilgrims find the Camino when snow covered the path.
