What to see in Foncebadón

Cruz de Ferro
A simple iron cross tops a wooden pole rising from a mound of stones on Monte Irago, about 2 km after Foncebadón, at around 1,500 m above sea level, making it the highest point of the Camino Francés. Some pilgrims bring a stone from home and leave it at the foot of the cross, symbolically leaving behind a burden. The origins of this custom are uncertain, with some theories linking it to ancient pre-Roman traditions and others to Roman boundary markers.
